Carta de representante del Partido Obrero (Comunista) de América al Secretario Ejecutivo del PO (C) 1924 10 14 Workers Party Montevideo Uruguay October 14th 1924 Dear Comrade: The Secretary of the Party here was out of town and had a conference with Comrade Eugenio Gomez, who is a member of the CEC of the CP and also the President of the Communist Daily Justicia.
The most astonishing thing about the Party here is that it has a Daily in size equal to the DAILY WORKER. The circulation of this paper is about 10. 000 sometimes less. The influence of this paper amongst the masses of workers in Uruguay is very great.
The membership of the Party is about 700, of the Communist Youth about 500. Here is also a Sporting Organization, which is under the control of the Party. The membership of it is about 600. This organization bears the name of the RILU and is similar to the one in Argentine. Everyone here is interested in sport and the Parties made use of this interest in order to organize the workers.
Here like in Argentine are a few groups of Women Workers. The Liberation of the woman is also a special issue here.
Uruguay has no Socialist Party. The syndicalists and Anarchists organizations like in Argentine are very much on the decline. In fact some of the Anarchist organizations have ceased to exist.
The CP here owns a building and a printing shop of a considerable size.
The estimate value of the Party property here is about 50. 000. The re also all indications to believe that the Party is very prosperous in comparison with the Party in Argentine.
The greatness of the USA investments here are beyond estimation. It seems that Swift and Armour own and control everything in this country. Swift and Armour is all that one can notice when he enters the port of Montevideo. 10. 000 workers are employed in the Swift plant. Two great towns right outside of Montevideo belong to the exploiters. Many other plants, banks, stores, buildings in the city elong to American capitalists.
The Communist Daily Justicia. is esteemed by all the workers in Uruguay. When an appeal was made by the CP for funds, 30000 dollars were collected in a few weeks. do hope that you will communicate with the party here as soon as possible. Here are the addresses:
